The My Son Sanctuary, also known as the My Son Sanctuary, is a famous archaeological complex located in Quang Nam Province, Vietnam. Approximately 70 km southwest of Da Nang city and about 40 km from Hoi An city, My Son is one of the UNESCO world heritage sites recognized in 1999. The complex symbolizes the flourishing Champa civilization from the 4th to the 14th century.
My Son Sanctuary not only attracts visitors with its unique architecture but also with the interesting historical story hidden in each brick and statue. It was once a religious centre for the Cham people, where rituals worshipping deities and memorialising kings and notable builders of the Champa kingdom took place.
The architecture of My Son is deeply influenced by the Hindu culture, with many temples built from sandstone and fired brick. These constructions were crafted with skill, featuring finely carved motifs depicting gods, mythical creatures, and vivid scenes from daily life of the Cham people.
A highlight here is the Cham towers, amongst which the A1 Tower (My Son A1) is the largest and also the most iconic symbol of the complex. Notably, many of My Son’s constructions were built employing the technique without mortar: bricks were interlocked with each other extremely skilfully, showcasing the ingenuity of the ancient Cham people.
Each temple at My Son was built to worship different deities, but mainly the god Shiva — the supreme deity in Hindu belief. These constructions not only held religious significance but also represented the power and prosperity of the Champa kingdom across various periods.
The My Son Sanctuary began to form from the 4th century, when the Cham people built the first temples dedicated to the god Shiva. Over successive dynasties, My Son became one of the most sacred and important sites of the Champa kingdom. However, in the 15th century, as the Champa declined, My Son experienced many upheavals and gradually became abandoned. Although it was ravaged by time and nature, what remains of My Son is still very valuable in terms of archaeology and history.
The discovery and exploitation of My Son’s heritage began in the 19th century, when the French surveyed and studied the area. Since then, many conservation and restoration activities have been carried out, helping My Son become an attractive tourist destination.
Today, My Son Sanctuary is not only an ideal destination for historians and cultural researchers but also attracts a large number of domestic and international tourists. Each year, millions of visitors come to behold the beauty of the ancient temples, learn about the Champa civilisation and experience the sacred atmosphere of the site.
The My Son Sanctuary also hosts cultural events and festivals to showcase and preserve the Cham cultural values. One of the notable events is the Cham Cultural Festival, held annually in March, where visitors can participate in cultural activities, enjoy folk music and traditional Cham dance.
Key highlights not to miss when visiting My Son
My Son Towers: The largest tower and also the most prominent symbol of the complex, built to worship the god Shiva and featuring many ancient inscriptions.
My Son Museum: Houses many precious artefacts related to the Cham civilisation, offering deep insights into their history and culture.
Cham temples: You will admire temples with unique architecture and rich sculptural art.
Natural scenery: My Son is surrounded by forests and majestic mountains, creating beautiful picturesque views and fresh atmosphere.
The My Son Sanctuary is not only a bridge between the past and the present but also evidence of the cultural development of a glorious historical period. With its ancient beauty and profound cultural value, My Son is a must‑visit on the cultural‑history route when you come to central Vietnam.
